Today we begin the Project Launch of the Sticking Together Project at Sunshine and Footscray in Western Melbourne and Marion and Torrensville in Adelaide ahead of the full pilot starting in January. The project launch is almost like a soft launch in the lead up to the pilot, allowing our coaches time to introduce the project to employment consultants, case workers and young people to get them on board for the pilot.
We thought this would also be a good time to introduce you to our new coaches Karim, Kirsten and Kara, who underwent training in Adelaide last week to get ready for today.
In Western Melbourne Karim Gamali joins Justin McConnell as our second coach. Karim joins the team after 5 years in Perth with SMYL Community Services where he was a VET trainer with at-risk students aged 15–22 years, supported years 11 and 12 VET students to complete traineeships by arranging work placements and workplace mentoring, and assisted students at its care school to find alternative pathways to complete WACE. On moving to Melbourne, Karim has been a volunteer in a basketball program for at-risk and refugee youths as a coach and facilitator of team building and leadership activities.
Our two Adelaide coaches are Kirsten Barlow and Kara Parrington. Kirsten is returning to her hometown of Adelaide after completing a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Queensland and working with Mercy Community Services as a Case Worker in the Supported Independent Living Program supporting young people transitioning out of the care of Department of Child Safety. Kirsten was also as a Recovery Worker in the Actioning Recovery and Citizenship Program with Footprints in Brisbane Inc. where she assisted clients in boarding houses or supported accommodations living with mental illness.
Kara transfers from the Job Prospects Adelaide site where she has been an employment consultant since 2015 and prior to this Kara spent 4 years with Workskil as a Post Placement Support Officer, Employment Consultant and Business Development Consultant building her skills with Stream B and C job seekers and employers.
Karim, Kirsten and Kara, along with Carla and Justin, complete the team and everyone is ready and raring to go for January!
